Adult Basic Skills Professional Development (ABSPD)
The ABSPD is housed at Appalachian State University and is part of the Reich School of Education. ABSPD provides professional development through Institutes, face to face workshops, online professional development, DVDs, training manuals, and web based resources. Their continuing goal is to improve the effectiveness and quality of instruction through focused professional development. They use research-based resources designed for ABE, Adult Secondary, and ESL instructors and incorporate teaching techniques designed to effectively reach these diverse populations. (This information is from the ASU website.)
Each summer, the ABSPD offers two one-week Summer Institutes. Beginning in 2014, participants who wish to earn the Certified Resource Specialist (CRS) designation must take Institute for graduate credit. (Those who began the process of earning their CRS prior to 2014 are grandfathered in and will not have to meet this requirement.) One who earns the Certified Resource Specialist designation has attended three Institutes and completed two practicum projects. They are recognized professional development leaders within their local programs and serve as a resource for guiding teaching and learning as well as for improving instructional quality.
More information regarding the 2015 Summer Institute will be placed here as it becomes available.
