Burlington English--my favorite ESL software programThis is an incredible software program for ESL students and the price seems right. They should probably pay me for saying such wonderful things about them, but they don't! Here are some flyers on Burlington English:

Grammar Chants by Carolyn GrahamCarolyn Graham wears two hats. She's an English to Speakers of Other Languages instructor at New York University and a jazz pianist. She has written a number of texts that use the natural rhythm of English to teach vocabulary, grammar, idioms, and sentence structure. If you get one of her books, it's worth it to also get the CD.

Index Card Games for ESL by Raymond C. ClarkOrdinary index cards can be used in many ways and this book capitalizes on that idea. The games are supplemental and all you need is a copy of the book, a copier, scissors, glue, and some index cards. Once you have created these games, you can use them over and over again. Here is a sample game that involves sequencing. It is intended for lower level ESL students.

10 Steps: Controlled Composition for Beginning and Intermediate Language Development by Gay Brookes and Jean Withrow (Currently out of print, but once published by Prentice Hall Regents. Amazon is probably your best bet. There is also a book called 26 Steps and it is more advanced.)10 Steps uses model passages with common vocabulary to help students focus on specific grammatical features. This book will not teach students to write independently, but it will provide them with models of good writing. Students work at their own pace and the instructor corrects student work. This goes quickly because the students are focusing on one grammatical element at a time. When I use this book in class, I have to make students STOP writing.

Writing Practical English by Tim HarrisPractical English and Writing Practical English are closely coordinated texts that use a story line format to keep students interested in the lessons. In a classroom that is self-access based, Writing Practical English can give instructors some breathing time to work with other students as the students working in the text follow carefully developed models of written English.

They are correlated to CASAS and although they are intended for use with the Ventures series, they work well alone.

Just-A-Minute by Elizabeth Claire (www.elizabethclaire.com)Have you ever watched the $10,000 Pyramid? There have been several television versions of that show and there is an ESL game as well. In one version of the game, students each receive a card with a title and eight (8) related words. They tell the class the title and then have just a minute to get their fellow students to guess the words on the card--without using their native language or any form of the word. You can buy this game on her website!
Cathy's Cards: Instant Conversation in the Classroom by Cathy Jo Seitchik Diaz (Alta Book Center Publishers)No time to make up index cards with conversation topics? Cathy's Cards are filled with conversational topics that can be used in a variety of ways. There's also a version of Cathy's Cards to help ESL students prepare for job interviews.
